" i did what was necessary. ” (Lucille from Rick)
BLOOD RELATED PROMPTS
The war was over, or so people thought after Rick slit Negan's throat. But a new bag of conflicts was about to be opened, because for some reason that not even Lucille —who'd spent years before the turn bending over backwards to justify his behavior— could understand, Negan was spared.
She didn't see Rick again until everyone settled back in their respective communities, and she hadn't been planning to almost walk into him, but she'd gone into the main house and there he was, staring down at his own bloodied knife with a thousand miles look in his eyes. Lucille stopped at the doorway, and it wasn't until Rick looked up that she realized she'd been frozen there.
Lucille turned on her heel. "I'll let you be–"
"Wait." just that word was enough to stop her and have her turning around to face him again. "Stay, please."
Taking in a deep breath, she walked over to where Rick was, sitting by his side but keeping a slight distance between the two of them. He watched her sit, then looked back down at the knife, silence settling between them.
"I honestly thought I'd be the last person you wanted to see."
"Why did you think that?" Rick questioned.
"Oh, you know..." Lucille trailed off, scratching at the spot on her ring finger where there'd once been a wedding ring, it hadn't been long ago that she'd gotten rid of it.
Lucille stared at the knife, unable to tear her gaze from it as the blood– Negan's blood, dried on the blade. Had Rick been holding onto it since that day? It wasn't until Rick held it out of sight that she was able to look away from it, feeling disgusted with herself for feeling any kind of sympathy for the bastard that had once been her husband. He didn't deserve anyone's mercy back before the dead walked, and he definitely didn't deserve it now.
Rick's shoulders slumped as he sighed. "I did what was necessary." something told Lucille that he'd said that same sentence many times since the fight. "I don't expect people to agree."
"I don't," Lucille admitted, because it would be stupid to pretend she did. "I've known him for longer than you have, and I've seriously considered killing him for less than what he's done to you guys, and that was before the world went to hell." it was the first time she told someone about that, it felt liberating to do so. "I don't understand why you let him live, but I also don't understand what you're going through. If your boy thought this was the right thing to do and you trust him, then... fuck it, Negan lives. People're gonna have to deal with it."
Rick looked up, stared at her for a long minute that made Lucille start thinking back on all she'd said to find what she'd said wrong, and then he laughed, and she was left watching in confusion as he put the knife back in its sheath and shook his head.
"You thought about killing your husband?" he asked, eyes crinkling in amusement.
"Oh, yeah," Lucille was quick to say, realizing that she must have said something right to somehow having made him smile. "See, I owned a gun before all this, a wedding gift from my pa– in case you needed any confirmation my folks didn't like Negan either." Rick snorted and Lucille grinned. "So, when I found out he was cheating on me, I waited for him to come back home, gun in hand, and I chickened out last minute."
"Damn."
"Yeah," Lucille sighed, scooting closer to Rick and nudging him. "So don't feel too special, I spared that asshole before you did."
